Compared to other nations worldwide, the United States squanders electricity the most. With environmental problems like pollution and the depletion of the ozone layer, we must be really aware of the amount of electricity we are consuming.

We will focus on a few things that all of us can do to conserve electricity and save money as well. These are really easy things that we all can do, you just need to make the decision to do them in order to help the Earth and ourselves.

The first thing you can do is to just switch off the lights when you exit the room. Majority of people will go out of a room for 10 to 15 minutes to go to the kitchen to get a snack or to do something else and they leave the light switched on in the room they left because they will be coming back in to the room shortly. Leaving the room unattended with the lights switched on can lead to as much as thirty minutes or more of wasted energy if done a couple of times a day. While 30 minutes doesn’t appear like much, keep in mind that millions upon millions of people do this each day. And every person who does this is squandering 182 hours of electricity annually for merely this one light. Let’s suppose we squander approximately 182 hours of electrical energy per year and we multiply that by one million people. That adds up to 182,000,000 hours of energy being squandered each year on merely one light.

Another thing that is causing electricity to be wasted is the habit a lot of people have of going in a room and switching the lights on. This has become second nature to numerous people. I catch myself doing this as well. Still, there could be sufficient light, perhaps sunlight, coming into a room. And still, we walk into a reasonably lit room and flip the light switch to on. Plus, many of us forget to flip the lights off because there is already a good deal of natural light coming in we don’t realize the light is still on. You only have to make a conscious effort to not flip the lights on during the day unless you need light.

Those who leave their televisions and radios switched on all day, when they are not even in the same room is one of the worst problems. When I come visit my mom, I have to remind her to switch the TV off because she would leave it running even though she’s not watching. This is a great waste of electrical power. Thus, if you’re not in the room, turn off the TV.

These are just some really simple tips that can go a long way to conserve energy and help save the Earth. If every person makes just a little effort to do these very simple things, it can add up to make a huge difference.
